Free form crochet is great for all of us that are just too stupid to follow even the most basic crochet patterns. After looking at a number of beginner (yeah, right) patterns online for scarves, I gave up and decided to just improvise and follow absolutely no rules with my scarf. If you google “free form crochet” you get a lot of colorful and creative results, but for me using lots of colors in my scarf would’ve just been too cheerful and artistic and that does not suit my usual all-black outfits at all. Using one solid color, would make it wearable and not too crazy looking.
I started out by making a chain about as long as I wanted my scarf to be.
My initial plan was to crochet normal stitches on the first few rows to make a good base for the scarf. I scrapped that plan pretty quickly and just free-formed the crap out everything from the first row and on to the end.
I’m not sure how others do free form, but for me it was a lot of chain 4- skip 10, chain 10 -skip 3 and lots of completely made up stitches, but as you can see there are a couple of normal stitches in there for a more varied look.
I didn’t even finish the first row before I begun on the second. NO RUUUULEEESSS!!!!!
After a while of total craziness, ended up with this.
I like how the finished scarf has this waterfall quality to it. It’s warm too!
